Discover Romance on the Slopes: Ski as a Couple

Let’s face it. Ski holidays are often associated with families. There is certainly the infrastructure for it! But ski areas also offer romantic chalets, spas, and candlelit dinners with striking snowy views. So, why not take advantage of a high altitude holiday and all the mountain has to offer with your special someone?

Why go as a couple?

”A

There are as many reasons as there are couples. Even ‘just because’ is good enough! But if you’re looking for some inspiration, we’ve compiled a (short) list of what couples’ ski holidays can look like. So, whether you’re looking to spend quality time together, get away from it all, or celebrate an important milestone, a ski holiday is the perfect place to do it!

Quality time

Everyday life can take its toll on any couple. You may see each other all the time and still feel like you don’t spend any quality time together! Far from the realm of household chores and responsibilities, couples can greatly benefit from each other’s undivided attention. Relax, recharge, and have a blast together on the slopes.

A great escape

What better way to get away from it all than to be secluded at a mountain retreat with your loved one? Whether you chose a chalet or a hotel, there's something romantic about being surrounded by picturesque mountain views. It can seem as if there’s no one else in the world—as if you have the Alps all to yourselves!

A special occasion

If you’re looking for a showstopper for a very special Valentine’s Day or a marriage proposal, look no further!  A ski holiday provides plenty of opportunities to make magic. Imagine sharing a glass of champagne in a traditional Alpine restaurant after a massage and a day on the slopes. There’s no better place to pop the question than your hotel balcony!

When to go as a couple?

That all depends! If you’d like some peace and quiet, opt for periods outside of half term holidays when hotels are full of small kids. Booking in early December or in March can also get you great rates! If you prefer a lively ambiance, book over January 1st. You and your sweetheart can ring in the New Year and go out dancing until dawn!

Top activities for couples

While skiing together is a lot of fun, there are so many uniqe activities to explore at ski resorts today. Having new experiences together is all part of the fun! Take advantage the best things on offer for the ultimate mountain experience. Here are a few of our favourites.

A dog sled ride

Dog sled rides are a great way to discover a snow-covered winter wonderland together. Take the reins if you’re in the mood for adventure or be driven by a professional musher. If it’s your first ride, opt for an introductory session, or baptism, where you can meet the dogs and learn all about the art of mushing.

Where to go: La Plagne, Tignes, Chamonix

An ice-skating outing

Natural or artificial, indoor or outdoor, ice-skating is now widely available at ski resorts. Opt for a night session lit by fairy lights for a romantic twist or participate in a ‘dance soirée’ with music playing in the background. It’s no problem if you or your sweetheart doesn’t know how to ice skate. It just means you’ll have to hold hands!

Where to go: Les Orres, La Clusaz, Val d’Isere

A romantic dinner

Why not share meal? Fondue is a traditional food that is perfect for sharing, and it’s certainly lots of fun to eat! Discover comforting mountain cuisine for two like raclette, tartiflette, and farçon. If you’re in the mood for something a bit more gourmet, look into Michelin-starred restaurants with tasting menus.

Where to go: Morzine, Chamonix, Couchevel, Megeve

Top 5 French ski resorts for couples

While there are certainly romantic ski activities and resorts in all corners of the globe, nothing quite beats the legendary slopes and scenic villages of the French Alps. The choice of accomodation is yours: a hotel, a chalet, or an apartment complex. Home to some of the largest ski areas in Europe, you’ll have no problem finding the perfect pistes. Add France’s fabled culture and cuisine to the menu, and you’ve got yourself a well-rounded holiday!

Chamonix: dinner for two with an Alpine view

The legendary ski resort Chamonix is a must-visit if you’re looking for panoramic views of Mount Blanc and access to some of the best ski instruction in the world. But skiing isn’t the only draw here. Chamonix also boasts multiple Michelin-starred restaurants—perfect for a romantic date. So, make it a culinary experience!

Val d’Isere: apres ski paradise

If you’re looking for a lively atmosphere, the apres ski scene at Val d’Isere may be for you. It’s a charming Alpine village dotted with local bars, live music, and restaurants. You and your partner will feel like you’re part of a small-town community! And of course, there is plenty of skiing. Val d’Isere shares the Espace Killy ski area with nearby Tignes: that’s 300km of pistes and 79 ski lifts.

Megeve: medieval charm and modern fun

If a fairy-tale village is more your style, Megeve could be your destination of choice. Its winding cobblestone streets ooze charm and romance. Why not go for a stroll? Despite the village feel, Megeve is not isolated. The slopes are easy access and so are 7 ‘fun areas.’ Jump off the Big Airbag, check out the Freestyle Area, or race your partner in a toboggan. Who knew romance could be so much fun?

Morzine: everything all at once

In Morzine, you’ve got the best of both worlds. Morzine is at once bustling and welcoming, tourist-friendly and lived-in by locals. It’s wide range of activities make it an ideal destination for the couple who wants a little bit of everything. There’s a great nightlife scene, and one of our favourite restaurants is located there. La Grange is a traditional Savoyarde restaurant with cosy mountain vibes, serving up local cuisine. Bon appetit!

Courchevel: class and elegance

Courchevel is part of the Three Valleys resort area, a Gold Standard resort. Take advantage of all the luxury it has on offer—from massages and spa treatments to hot air balloon rides and the largest mountain waterpark in Europe! The skiing is not bad either: Courchevel’s location in the Three Valleys means it’s part of a network of 8 ski resorts with 600km of ski slopes.
