Obergurgl ski resort

Located at the upper end of the Ötztal valley in Tyrol, Obergurgl forms part of the Obergurgl-Hochgurgl ski area, also known as Gurgl. With its high-altitude villages, ski-in/ski-out accommodation and long winter season, the resort is particularly appreciated by visitors looking for reliable snow and a quieter Alpine atmosphere.

The ski area offers 112 km of slopes served by 25 modern lift facilities. Extending from approximately 1,800 metres to 3,030 metres above sea level, it is one of Austria’s highest non-glacier ski areas. Obergurgl and Hochgurgl are connected by the Top Express gondola, allowing visitors to explore both sectors without returning to the valley.

The terrain includes wide blue pistes, long red descents and demanding black runs. Panoramic highlights include the Top Mountain Star at 3,030 metres and the Hohe Mut Alm, surrounded by numerous peaks rising above 3,000 metres.

Explore 112 km of slopes across the connected Obergurgl and Hochgurgl sectors. Wide pistes around the Gaisberg and Festkogl are suitable for families and intermediate skiers, while more experienced visitors can discover steeper terrain around the Hohe Mut and Wurmkogel. The Top Express gondola connects the two main sectors, making it possible to spend the day exploring the entire ski area. The resort’s altitude provides reliable conditions from November through April.

Discover the Top Mountain Star

Travel to the Top Mountain Star at 3,030 metres and enjoy panoramic views across the Ötztal Alps and towards the Dolomites. The glass-fronted mountain bar and viewing platform occupy one of the highest accessible points in the ski area. Visitors can also explore the Top Mountain Motorcycle Experience near the Hochgurgl sector, one of Europe’s highest motorcycle museums.

Winter hiking and snowshoeing

Discover more than 20 km of prepared winter hiking trails through the high-altitude landscape surrounding Obergurgl and Hochgurgl. Routes lead through the valley, towards mountain huts and across peaceful snow-covered terrain. Snowshoeing and guided excursions provide another way to explore the Ötztal Nature Park and the quieter landscapes beyond the ski pistes.

Events not to be missed in Obergurgl

Gurgl Ski Opening

On 19 November 2026, Gurgl is scheduled to begin its winter season. Thanks to the resort’s elevation between 1,800 and 3,030 metres, Obergurgl-Hochgurgl is traditionally among the first non-glacier ski areas in Austria to open. The opening provides visitors with an early opportunity to discover the slopes, mountain restaurants and high-altitude winter scenery

Audi FIS Ski World Cup Gurgl

On 21 and 22 November 2026, international Alpine ski racers will gather in Gurgl for an Audi FIS Ski World Cup weekend. The programme will feature high-level slalom racing in the impressive high-Alpine setting above Obergurgl. Visitors can watch some of the world’s best technical skiers and enjoy a lively opening-season atmosphere.

Diamond Beats

From 10 to 12 March 2027, Diamond Beats will combine skiing, music and culinary experiences in Gurgl. Performances and entertainment will take place in selected mountain and village venues. The event offers visitors an opportunity to enjoy spring skiing during the day before discovering live music and evening entertainment in the resort.

How to get to Obergurgl?

By train

The nearest railway station is Ötztal Bahnhof, approximately 50 km from Obergurgl. It has direct or connecting services from Innsbruck, Salzburg, Zurich, Munich and other major cities.

Regular regional buses travel from Ötztal Bahnhof through the valley to Sölden, Obergurgl and Hochgurgl. Taxis and private transfer services are also available.

By car

Obergurgl can be reached from Innsbruck in approximately 1.5 hours and from Munich in around 3 to 3.5 hours, depending on traffic and winter conditions.

Drivers travel through the Ötztal valley via Sölden before continuing to Obergurgl. The road is normally kept open throughout winter, although winter tyres are compulsory and snow chains may be required during heavy snowfall. An Austrian motorway vignette is needed when using motorways.

By plane

Innsbruck Airport is the closest airport, approximately 100 km away. Obergurgl can be reached by car, shuttle or by travelling to Ötztal Bahnhof and continuing by regional bus.

Memmingen Airport, approximately 190 km away, and Munich Airport, around 250 km away, provide additional options for international travellers.
