Suitcase for skiing: what to take if you're going for the first time?

You're heading off on your ski trip soon and wondering what essentials to pack to avoid any unpleasant surprises? If it's your first time skiing and you're unsure what to include in your suitcase, we've prepared a list of must-haves and accessories for you and your children for your ski holiday. As you might expect, temperatures at ski resorts are very low. Therefore, warm clothing and suitable footwear for walking in the snow are indispensable. Additionally, we recommend protecting your skin on the ski slopes, as many people return with sunburns.

Ski Outfit

Fleeces

A fleece is very practical under your ski jacket and during your evenings at your accommodation, depending on the temperature. You can bring 3-4 fleeces for your week, depending on the space available in your suitcase. You can also layer multiple clothing items to retain as much heat as possible. Opt for Thermolactyl clothing, which you can wear under other garments like fleeces. These are designed to withstand negative temperatures, keeping you warm throughout your ski holiday.

Ski Gloves and Liners

While you may not wear gloves throughout the winter, they are highly recommended in the mountains, as temperatures are often negative. Additionally, ski gloves are waterproof and will protect you from the biting wind. Liners are thinner and more practical under ski gloves during your sessions on the slopes. You’ll find a variety of options, such as touchscreen liners, allowing you to use your phone and take photos, for example. Both gloves and liners are perfect for keeping your hands warm during outdoor walks.

The helmet

This accessory is recommended for your safety on the ski slopes. Whether you are a beginner or an expert on red or black runs, it helps protect your head in case of a fall. Strongly recommended for everyone, the ski helmet is mandatory for children in ski school. Therefore, at the kids' garden or Piou-Piou club, your children will need to wear a protective helmet.

The beanie

Ski Boots for After-Ski

Unsure whether to bring your sneakers or your ski boots? We recommend bringing Ski Boots for After-Ski. These boots are essential for moving around the resort without slipping. Plus, they’ll keep your feet dry and warm, which is crucial when temperatures can drop below freezing. Pack these boots directly to avoid unnecessary bulk and save space in your suitcase.

Warm socks

Having warm and thick socks is essential for your mountain holiday. Whether for warmth or comfort, ski socks should be prioritized. There are several types of socks, such as thermal socks or wool socks (e.g., Merino). Cotton should be avoided as it traps moisture. We recommend bringing as many pairs as the number of days you'll be skiing. Ski socks are highly recommended to ensure optimal comfort in your ski boots.

Underwear

As with most ski clothing, choose thermal and technical underwear to retain heat. The advantage of choosing this type of underwear is that you can avoid packing bulky sweaters that will take up too much space in your suitcase. For your nights in the resort, don't forget to pack warm pajamas.

Neck gaiter / Scarf

A neck gaiter and scarf are essential for your ski holiday. The neck gaiter will be useful during your ski sessions on the slopes and your après-ski activities, protecting you from the cold winds. The scarf, on the other hand, can be helpful during leisurely walks around the resort or more relaxed moments. These items are crucial for ensuring a great holiday in the mountains and preventing you from catching a chill.

UV4 Sunglasses or Ski Goggles

Sunglasses and ski goggles are essential during your ski holiday. Skiing with goggles provides an unmatched level of comfort, especially when it comes to protecting against light, wind, and snow. Your eyes will be better shielded, allowing for a more enjoyable experience. Sunglasses, on the other hand, are useful for après-ski activities, such as walking around the resort. The sun's rays are stronger in the mountains, so protection is a must.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is highly recommended in the mountains. As mentioned for sunglasses, the sun is stronger at higher altitudes. Therefore, don’t forget to protect your face while skiing on the slopes to avoid getting sunburned during your holiday.

Lip Balm

This is essential for braving the cold during your outdoor adventures. To prevent chapped lips from the cold or damage caused by the sun, choose a sunscreen lip balm for effective protection.

Moisturizer

Your moisturizer will be your best friend during your ski holiday. The moisturizing cream will protect your skin from the cold and especially from the temperature changes between the outside and inside. You can easily find a moisturizer to prevent dry skin.

Reusable Water Bottle

You often spend half a day or even the entire day on the ski slopes. As with all sports, hydration is important, and you'll need it during your skiing, snowboarding, or hiking sessions.

Backpack

A backpack is very practical for your travels. You can store your sunscreen, lip balm, and water bottle in it. With your backpack, you'll be well-equipped for great moments on the ski slopes.

Importante Documents Not to Forget

Be sure to bring the official documents listed below, which may be useful during your ski trip, especially in case of any unexpected situations:

  • ID card or passport
  • Health insurance card and mutual insurance
  • Bank card (or cash)
  • Train tickets
  • Accommodation reservation documents

Chains for Your Car

Since 1st November 2021, snow chains are mandatory in the departments of mountainous regions. How to fit snow chains?

The little extras

  • A camera
  • A first aid kit
  • Clothes for your after-ski evenings in the mountains

We hope our tips will help you easily pack for your mountain stay. You can rent certain items such as helmets, ski or snowboard equipment. If you already have your ski boots, you can just rent the skis or snowboards separately. You will easily find warm clothes to buy in the resort if you think you’ve forgotten something in your suitcase.
