Snowmobiling

Snowmobile rides are a great way to add some excitement to your ski holiday. This sporty activity requires some basic control of the vehicle and confidence on snowy terrain. But don’t worry — it’s easy to learn, and it’s a fantastic way to explore the mountains from a new perspective. Follow our tips and make the most of your time in the snow.

Snowmobiling on the slopes: the perfect mix of adventure and sport

What is snowmobiling?

Also known as a snow scooter, the snowmobile is a small motorbike fitted with front skis that allow it to glide smoothly over snowy trails. Snowmobiling has become one of the most popular activities during ski holidays.

Unlike skiing or snowboarding — which often require good physical condition and strong joints — snowmobiling is accessible to almost everyone. You can rent a snowmobile and set off on an unforgettable and wild ride through the mountains.

Anyone over 18 with a full UK driving licence can operate a snowmobile with an engine over 50cc. Passengers are usually welcome from the age of 8 and up.

When and how to ride a snowmobile?

Snowmobiling usually takes place once the ski slopes are closed, or on specially marked trails and pedestrian paths dedicated to the activity. A qualified instructor will first teach you how to handle the vehicle — how to glide along the snowy tracks, keep a steady pace, and brake safely without risking a collision.

You’ll also be given all the basic safety instructions before setting off. The instructor will lead the way, and it’s important to follow at the same speed to keep the group safe and together throughout the ride.

Most snowmobile rides last around an hour, giving you plenty of time to take in the stunning winter scenery and enjoy the thrill of the experience.

What gear should you bring for a snowmobile ride?

Warm clothes, of course!

Since snowmobiling usually takes place after 5:30pm, it’s important to dress warmly and carefully. Start with thermal base layers to help maintain a steady body temperature. Over these, wear an insulated snowsuit to stay warm and comfortable throughout the ride.

Pay special attention to your extremities — thick socks, thermal or fleece glove liners, and waterproof, wind-resistant gloves are essential. A scarf or balaclava is also highly recommended to protect your neck and face from the cold.

Most tour operators provide essential gear such as snowsuits, full-face helmets, and a hygiene-friendly balaclava. A waterproof bag can also come in handy to keep your personal belongings dry during the ride.

Accessories to fully enjoy the surroundings

Don’t forget to bring a backpack with a good moisturiser and lip balm, as even if your ride starts after sunset, your skin still needs protection. After placing your skincare products in a plastic bag, you can also bring your camera. Be careful when taking it out, as many cameras have been lost in the snow. Trying to find one is as difficult as searching for a needle in a haystack.

Where can you go snowmobiling?

In the Alps

This activity has become popular, and many ski resorts now offer snowmobiling. For example, you can explore unique sites from 5:30pm in Val Thorens. At Les Deux Alpes, Vars, and Tignes, snowmobiles are available to rent just like ski, snowboard, or sledging equipment.

However, you’ll need to book your snowmobile tour in advance, as many people are eager to discover this exciting way to explore the wilderness. Don’t forget to bring your driving licence if you plan to operate the snowmobile.

You can check on the Travelski website whether the resort you’re planning to visit offers snowmobiling activities.

In the Pyrenees

La Mongie, Barèges, and Saint-Lary-Soulan have also embraced the snowmobiling trend, offering guided excursions with experienced instructors. You’ll be taken along scenic trails deep in nature, discovering stunning places in complete safety and in the company of your loved ones.

In the Jura

Les Rousses, a true family-friendly resort, also offers snowmobile excursions. As a fun discovery activity, it’s perfect to enjoy with others and create unique memories.

Prices are usually charged by the hour, around €130 for solo or tandem rides. Optional insurance is available.

You’ve chosen your next mountain holiday activity and want to try something new — here’s where to enjoy big bag air.
