Known as the "City of the Dukes," Chambéry is a pleasant place to live year-round thanks to its stunning mountain and lake surroundings. In Chambéry’s town centre, the iconic fountain “Les 4 sans culs” (The Four Half-Elephants) is just a few minutes’ walk from the recently renovated Chambéry - Challes-Les-Eaux train station (refurbished in 2021).

Chambéry is a gateway to the Alpine ski resorts. You can admire several mountain ranges: the Chaîne de l’Épine with the Dent du Chat in the background; the Bauges massif stretching to Annecy and Albertville, featuring the famous Croix du Nivolet overlooking the Margeriaz; the Chartreuse massif with its renowned Mont Granier; and nestled between the latter two, the Belledonne range, snow-capped nearly all year round.

As the capital of Savoie in the Northern Alps, Chambéry is the entry point to France’s most famous valley, the Tarentaise, as well as the milder but no less remarkable Maurienne valley. Discover the ski resorts closest to Chambéry.
